Expected Learning Outcomes
Graduates of the Master of Science in Public Nutrition shall:
- Demonstrate theoretical and skill-based knowledge of nutrition science needed for public health nutrition practice.
- Demonstrate methodological and analytic skills necessary to acquire, analyze, and apply data to enact the core public health functions of assessment, assurance, and policy development, and be able to evaluate nutrition programs and services for populations.
- Demonstrate organizational management and leadership skills needed to develop, implement and sustain systems of care, programs and interventions (including preventive and treatment) for improving the nutritional health of populations.
- Acquire policy and advocacy skills to promote the nutritional health of populations in policies, laws and regulations in public and private sectors.
- Acquire cultural competency skills to develop programs and services that are responsive to the cultural, social, linguistic, and ethnic diversity of the community.

Programme Requirement
To be admitted for the Master of Science degree in Public Health Nutrition the candidate shall be a holder of:
Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics, Bachelor of Science/ Bachelor of Education in Home Science and Technology or related fields with at least second class honours upper division from Maseno University or other recognized institutions of higher learning.
OR
Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics, Bachelor of Science/ Bachelor of Education in Home Science and Technology or related fields with lower second from Maseno University or other recognized institutions of higher learning plus relevant postgraduate training and field experience as proven by referred published papers, technical reports and patent documents.
The normal duration of the MSc degree programme shall be two academic years or four semesters of full-time/part-time attendance provided that part-time attendance shall not exceed a period of four calendar years from the date of registration.
Duration of the Programme
The duration of the program shall normally be four (4) academic years.
Teaching methods in all units shall include lectures, field trips, seminars, tutorials, discussions, and practical.
Degree Structure
The program offers courses within the degree structure spelled out by the Faculty.
Course Structure
- Course work must include at least 1 unit of Research methodology.
- The MSc degree in Public Health Nutrition shall consist of a minimum of a maximum of 19 core units of coursework, examination and thesis distributed over four semesters as below:
Masters by Coursework and Thesis
First Semester: Coursework: 6 units max
Second Semester: Coursework: 6 units max
Research Proposal 1 unit
Third Semester: Research 2 units
Fourth Semester: Research/Thesis submission 4 units
- During the coursework semesters, students shall be encouraged to propose prospective supervisors to the Chairperson DPGSC, from amongst the postgraduate faculty in the department.
- The candidate shall submit a thesis research proposal to the DPGSC within 4 weeks of the next semester following completion of coursework.
- Within two days of proposal receipt, the DPGSC Chairperson shall forward the proposal to the Chairperson, SPGSC who will convene a proposal presentation seminar that must be attended by all postgraduate faculty of the department concerned and chairpersons of DPGSC in the Faculty or their representatives. All postgraduate studies faculty shall be invited to the presentations. The Chairperson, SPGSC/representative shall chair the presentations.
- The processing of the submitted thesis research proposal from the DPGSC to School of Graduate Studies shall take a maximum of four (4) weeks.
