Overview of the Programme
The Master of Public Health degree programme at Maseno University is primarily concerned with the promotion of health, prevention of disease and prolonging life as well as assessment of health care delivery. Health and development studies are thus aimed at providing research, training and outreach services that focuses on the needs of communities and societies. The programme is tailored to various public and community health priority areas thus allowing a wider range of choices for students with different backgrounds.
The MPH courses focus on the theory, philosophy and practice of Public Health issues that affect various populations as well as the management within a policy and problem-solving framework. Differing approaches to Public health problems are examined along with case studies, professional practice and various management tools. Problem solving approaches are taken in respect of Public Health management applications and plans that health in solving societal health problems hence improves population health
Vision
The vision of the Master of Public Health programme is to have students that are empowered and equipped with knowledge and skills on how to prevent and promote their own health and development thus enabling them to cope with the changing trends in life.
Mission
The Mission of the programme and the role of the School of Public Health and Community Development are to improve the standards of health of people by training Public Health specialists with a hands-on approach in leadership and management of programs at community and institutional levels.
Programme Objectives
The MPH Programme is intended to prepare students to:
- Acquire basic skills and knowledge and develop appropriate attitude to identify, assess, plan, prioritise and measure the impact of public health intervention on human population and the environment.
- Undertake rational decision in clinical and public health practices
- Demonstrate an understanding of the influence of environment, social, economic and cultural practices on health and health care delivery at local and global setting
- Apply knowledge and skills in professional national and international health care services and disease prevention
Expected learning outcomes:
- The graduates of this programmes will be able to:
- Demonstrate problem solving skills by applying, analyzing, and synthesizing content knowledge in public health
- Identify component parts, relationships and ideas of determinants of health
- Achieve core competencies in Public Health
- Display ethical behaviours, cultural sensitivity, teamwork, professional conduct and Health Education and Communication
- Assess and monitor the health of communities and populations at risk to identify health problems and priorities.
- Formulate public policies designed to solve identified local and national health problems and priorities.
- Design health activities that will assure that all populations have access to appropriate and cost-effective care, including health promotion and disease prevention services.
Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the M.P.H. programme, an applicant must:
- Satisfy Maseno University minimum entry requirements for admission into Postgraduate studies from a credited Institution by the CUE.
- Graduates of health sciences such as B.Sc. Public Health, BSc. Environmental Science, Nursing, B.Sc. Nutrition and Veterinary Medicine.
- Graduates of MBChB or its equivalent from a recognized University.
- Graduates of Dentistry, Pharmacy who are interested in a career in Public Health.
- Graduates of Biological Sciences and Physical Sciences
- Holders of a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences.
Programme Duration
- The duration of the M.P.H. programme shall consist of two academic years distributed over four semesters.

Specialization areas
The M.P.H degree shall be offered in three (3) specialization areas and students will be expected to select one of the following areas at the end of semester one.
i. M.P.H. in Epidemiology and Population Health
ii. M.P.H. in Health Promotion and International Health
iii. M.P.H. in Health Systems Management
