About the Programme|

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in Biomedical Sciences Programmein the School of Public Health and Community Development (SPHCD) is intended to impart specialized knowledge and skills in the applications of biomedical techniques used in investigating the functioning of the human body in health and disease and understanding mechanisms of disease transmission and control. These degree programs are designed for postgraduate students in relevant biological, physical, biomedical and clinical sciences or with equivalent professional qualifications who wish to acquire in-depth understanding of the specialized disciplines in Biomedical Sciences. The PhD programme provides students with research training with a unique emphasis on human health and diseases. These courses are intended to create competencies in highly specialized biomedical fields and scientific attitudes relating to the general health of individuals, the community, and the public. The students in the programme have the flexibility to choose from among eleven curricular tracks and tailor their research thesis to each individual student’s area of specialization and interest.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Sciences programme:

1. Applicants must satisfy the minimum university entrance requirements.

2. Candidates holding a Master of Science degree in any of the basic life sciences from recognized institutions also qualify for admission.

Duration of the Programme

Duration for Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Sciences programme in the university is a minimum of three (3) academic years and a maximum of five (5) years for full-time registered students; and a minimum four (4) years and a maximum seven (7) years for part-time registered students

Programme Structure

The program is offered by is offered by course work, examinations, supervised research and thesis.
Course Structure

The first year of coursework is made up of two semesters. The candidate shall in second year of study proceed to conduct the research. Proposal writing, Research and thesis writing take four semesters. There are six set learner directed Seminars and six Workshops aimed at providing students with hands-on experience of specific academic skills.
